“The world has come a long way in the fight against climate change and its negative impacts on our planet. We can now better understand the science behind climate change, assess its impacts, and develop tools to address its causes and consequences.”  H.E Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, welcome note at COP 27 Conference.

In alignment with the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) to be held at the city of Sharm El-Sheikh during the period from 6th to 18th of November 2022, under the patronage of H.E President of the Arab Republic of Egypt Abdel Fattah El-Sisi; Egypt University of Informatics (EUI) is glad to launch this hackathon powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS) for all universities students across Egypt, Arab Countries, and Africa, and under the patronage of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) & The Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific Research. Students showcase an existential threat that can be controlled through collective actions and effective implementation of technology solutions to address different climate change and SDGs alignment challenges.

Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts may be natural, but since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change. Burning fossil fuels (like coal, oil, and gas) produces heat-trapping gases. Investors, companies, and communities are overexposed to climate-related risks, which hinder opportunities to make the best use of the climate. Climate change and our responses create secular trends that impact every sector, asset class, and geography. Most analytics and strategies fail to integrate critical factors beyond energy and carbon, like technology, policy, resources, consumer preference, climate and weather, and macroeconomics. Innovation is key to achieving sustainable development goals. It provides solutions to challenges, ranging from decarbonizing operations to water conservation through technologies that drive sustainable transformation.

Egypt University of Informatics (EUI) is a non-profit university, established by Ministry of Communications and Information Technology in collaboration with Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. EUI’s vision is to be a distinguished hub for highly skilled professionals in Information & Communication Technology and related multi-disciplinary and multi-professional areas and to pioneer in outstanding applied scientific research, positioning Egypt as a significant leading hub in technology-related focus areas in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

EUI is committed to providing outstanding education and scientific research equivalent to reputable international universities, which consequently position it as a center for producing knowledge and distinguished highly skilled professionals in information and communication technology and related multi-disciplinary areas. EUI aims to provide leading capacity-building programs and consultations, including contributions to human, societal, and economic development.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud platform, offering over 200 fully featured services from data centers globally. Millions of customers—including the fastest-growing startups, largest enterprises, and leading government agencies—are using AWS to lower costs, become more agile, and innovate faster.

AWS’ customers build sustainability solutions, ranging from carbon tracking and energy conservation to waste reduction, using AWS services to ingest, analyze, and manage sustainability data. AWS offers the broadest and most profound set of capabilities in artificial intelligence, machine learning, the Internet of Things, Data Analytics, and computing to achieve sustainability goals.

AWS provides knowledge and tools for organizations of all sizes and sectors to build and implement solutions that meet their sustainability goals. AWS is focused on efficiency and continuous innovation across our global infrastructure as we continue on our path to powering our operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025.

EUI and AWS collaboratively invite students from all universities in Egypt, Arab and African Countries to compete and participate in this hackathon with innovative ideas using technology to support the globe in defying climate change.
